Conflict of Interest

All employees of the college are subject to the Massachusetts Conflict of Interest Law (MGL c. 268A). Chapter 268A of the Massachusetts General Laws requires that state employees give undivided loyalty to the State and act in the public interest rather than for private gain. This law sets forth a minimum standard of ethical conduct for all state employees and officials. The purpose of the law is to ensure that public employees’ private financial interests and personal relationships do not conflict with their public obligations. The law governs what you may do on the job, what you may do after hours or "on the other side" and what you may do after you leave public service. It also sets standards of conduct for all state employees and officials.

Some of the provisions of this law prohibit the acceptance of gifts by state employees, involvement of public employees in state contracts, and related matters in which he/she may have a financial interest, and restricts the types of secondary employment certain types of employees may accept.

The Massachusetts State Ethics Commission provides free legal advice about how the law applies in a particular situation. We encourage you to seek legal advice from the commission if you think you face a potential conflict of interest.

Some employees are also required to file annual financial disclosure forms with the Massachusetts State Ethics Commission. Those employees are notified of this requirement directly. For more information, visit the Massachusetts State Ethics Commission website. Responsibility for compliance and penalties for violation fall solely on the individual employee; however, the integrity of the entire community is put at risk if any of its members are guilty of unlawful conflicts.
