How Do I Use a Custom Home Page Template?

The college currently provides a few home page templates that can help you create a clear and welcoming entry point for your Canvas course. This page includes instructions on how to import a template into your course, set it as your course home page, customize its contents, and obtain additional support.

Home Page Options

The college currently offers two home page templates:

Design A: Home Page With Navigation Links

Design B: Basic Home Page

Step 01: Import a Template

To import a template to your course, visit the course's Home page and click on the Import from Commons button.

A list of menu menu buttons: Import Existing Content, IMport from Commons, Choose Home Page

You'll be taken to a page where you can view available templates. Click on the name of a template to learn more about it. Note: The image of the template that you'll see on this page will look different than the one depicted in the ones on this page. This is normal. After you import the page to your course, it will appear as it does in this article.

To import a template page into your course(s), click the Import/Download button. You'll be shown a list of your courses. Check the boxes next to the appropriate course names and click the Import into Course button.

The Import/Download tray listing courses, check boxes, and an "Import into Course" button.

After a few moments, you will be shown an on-screen notification that your import was successful.

A banner reading "You have successfully started the import! It may take a little while to see changes in your course."

Step 02: Set Your Course Home Page

After the page template has been imported to your course, you'll need to designate it as the one you'd like students to see when they visit the site:

  2. How do I change the Course Home Page?

Step 03: Customize the Page Content

The home page templates contain several areas for you to customize, including the course title [A], the course number and your name [B], and the page body content [E]. For the best results, change text by highlighting and typing over it, rather than using the backspace (delete) key, as depicted in section [A] of the screenshot below.

Navigation links [D] will be displayed as plain text when you edit your home page. These links use special styling rules and are not designed to be changed by individual instructors.

This page will be updated shortly with instructions on how you can customize the home page banner [C].
