Using or Borrowing a MassArt Laptop

MassArt provides College-owned laptops to full time faculty, staff, and other authorized employees when needed for College-related work. If you are assigned or borrow a MassArt laptop, the information below explains what you should know about using, caring for, and returning the equipment.

About Your MassArt Laptop

MassArt laptops and associated equipment remain the property of Massachusetts College of Art and Design. They are provided primarily to support College-related academic, administrative, and business activities. Because the laptop is College-owned equipment, MassArt IT may need access to it periodically for maintenance, security updates, inventory, repair, replacement, or other technology needs.

Using the Laptop

  • Take reasonable care to protect the computer from loss, theft, damage, and unauthorized access.
  • Do not transfer or loan the laptop to another person without contacting MassArt IT.
  • Use College-provided software in accordance with its licensing requirements.
  • Do not copy or distribute software licensed to MassArt unless the license specifically permits it.
  • Software that is not provided or licensed by MassArt may not be supported by MassArt IT and may be removed if it creates security, compatibility, or licensing concerns.

Updates and Maintenance

MassArt IT manages College-owned laptops to help keep devices and the campus technology environment secure.Do not remove or disable College-installed security, management, encryption, or endpoint protection tools.

From time to time, IT may need to update, reconfigure, repair, replace, or re-image a laptop. A laptop may also need to be returned temporarily for inventory, audit, security, or maintenance purposes.

Getting Help

If you experience a problem with a MassArt laptop, contact the MassArt Technology Help Desk for assistance.  College-owned computers should not be taken to an outside repair provider or modified without first contacting MassArt IT.

Lost, stolen, or significantly damaged equipment should be reported to MassArt IT as soon as possible.

Returning or Transferring a Laptop

If a MassArt laptop needs to be returned, replaced, or assigned to someone else, please work with the IT department. Laptops should not be transferred directly from one employee to another. IT needs to process the transfer so the computer can be properly inventoried, secured, configured, and assigned to the new user.

College-owned equipment should also be returned when an individual's employment, appointment, or other need for the equipment ends, unless other arrangements have been made with MassArt.
