Selling Artwork

Summary

As an F-1 international student, selling your artwork in the U.S. may be considered unauthorized employment unless you have received specific authorization.

Body

As an F-1 international student, selling your artwork in the U.S. may be considered unauthorized employment unless you have received specific authorization. Without the proper authorization, you could be in violation of your current immigration status and jeopardize any future status in the United States.

Activities such as repeated or extensive sale of artwork, or creation of art on commission or for the purpose of being sold, are more likely to be considered unauthorized employment. Since there is not a clear definition of when the sale of items would be considered unauthorized employment, the IEC recommends that you avoid such activity.

In certain circumstances, F-1 international students may be permitted to sell artwork while on post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Schedule an appointment with your international student advisor to learn more.
