As an F-1 International Student, you are required to file tax related documentation every year even if you did not earn any money. The tax year is January 1st - December 31st. The annual deadline to file your tax documents for the previous tax year is April 15th. The documentation you must submit is usually a tax return or tax document that states you are not required to file a tax return because you did not earn income.
At MassArt, we are unable to advise you on the tax filing process due to the complexity of tax law in the United States. However, we realize that as an international student the process can be confusing and overwhelming. To help you find it easier we work with the The Colleges of the Fenway GEO Center to provide all MassArt international students with access to free tax software. MassArt and the COF GEO Center are not qualified tax accountants and cannot provide advice or expertise.
Here are a few important things to keep in mind prior to using the free tax software:
- Filing taxes takes time! Before you begin, ensure you have at least a few hours set aside to complete the process
- Access to the tax software is a benefit, but using it is optional. If you do not find it easy to use, you can choose to file your taxes another way (such as working with an attorney or an accountant at your own cost).
Please note, we do not monitor the tax filing process and we do not check if you have completed your taxes. It is your responsibility to file either a tax return or a form stating you do not need to file a tax return.
